Fuchsia ‘Hawkshead’
Sub-shrubs are best thought of as woody perennials that freeze to the ground and return from the base. Hardy Fuchsias and Abutilons are two examples of commonly grown sub-shrubs in our climate. They may be cut to the ground to re-grow in spring.

Fuchsia ‘Allison Patricia’ Zn8a (10º to 15ºF) Onagraceae
A delightful new Fuchsia that with upturned multicolored flowers on a compact plant. To 20” tall and 1’ wide in a season. The unique flowers have four colors. The sepals are coral hanging from an orange tube it opens to reveal a corolla of hot pink tinted green. Regular water and rich soil in full sun to light shade. Plant with the crown 4” below soil level and mulch in the fall for added winter protection.

'Amy Lye' is a very old hardy Fuchsia cultivar with large single flowers with sepals of white with light pink tones surrounding a corolla of deep coral/rose.To 3' tall in a season and arching. Part shade and rich soil with regular water in a cool position. Pinch early to encourage branching and mulch in the fall. Great old standby garden Fuchsia. Fertilize several times a season. Plant deeply (crown 3 "below soil level) for added winter protection.

A very hardy garden Fuchsia with a profuse amounts of lovely large pink flowers with a sepals (the tops) dipped in dark pink and a lucious strawberry pink corolla. Good self branching habit to about 20" tall and as wide. Great container subject, though hardier to cold in the ground. Part shade in rich soil with regular water in summer. Plant deeply to aid in establishment, winter hardiness. Prune out dead wood in spring after growth begins.

A wonderful garden Fuchsia with handsome deep green, slightly serrated leaves
and long flowers with a light pink tube and a salmon corolla. To about 2' tall and as wide in part shade to shade in rich soil with regular water. Mulch in the fall, and plant with the crown 4" below soil level for added winter protection.One of the first to bloom in early summer. Loves liquid organic fertilizer in summer.
Fuchsia ‘Cardinal’ Zn7a (0º to 5ºF) Onagraceae
A true giant among hardy Fuchsias 'Cardinal' is a classic with large leaves and large flowers with sepals of rich red and a corolla of magenta fading to red. In part shade and fertile soil it will reach 8' in a single year. Regular water and protection from late afternoon sun. Rich soil speeds growth, protect from strong winds. Not just a great Fuchsia, but an EXCELLENT garden plant as well. Mulch in fall.

An excellent garden Fuchsia that is one of the best true oranges. Good seasonal container plant. Freezes to the ground- returns in spring. Apply organic all purpose organic fertilizer in late spring.

Doreen is a great hardy fuchsia with a compact habit and an even better habit of blooming her brains out with sepals of light green/white and a corolla that starts violet blue and fades to violet. To 20" tall and as wide- upright. Great garden fuchsia and nice in a container. Plant deeply to protect the crown for winter in rich soil in part shade with regular water and fertilizer. Blooms heavily from June to frost.

An adorable, hardy garden Fuchsia with an upright, but compact habit to about 30" tall and 2' wide. A bold Fuchsia with large heart shaped leaves of a soft mien edged in creamy white. Copious amounts of tubular light orange/red flowers tipped in cream appear until frost. Arching habit to 20” tall and as wide in a single season. Best as a container component, where it will provide contrast.Tender to cold. In the ground plant in a protected location- plant it deeply and mulch well each fall. Part shade to shade in RICH, moist soil. An ultra cold hardy golden leaved Fuchsia with a very upright habit. Single flowers with sepals of cerise pink and a corolla of soft lavender blue. To 30" tall and forming a stout shrub. Part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade in rich soil with regular water in summer. Great container plant as well. Plant deeply, 4" below the soil surface for added winter protection. Fuchsia hatchbachii Zn7a (0º to 5ºF) Onagraceae
One of our most favorite garden Fuchsias, this particular variety has been grown as F. regia in the past. This is the true name. It is quite possibly one of the hardiest of all Fuchsias. Wood remains unfrozen on this variety down to 15ºF. A very tall, arching shrub that may also be treated as a non-twining climber. Thin shiny leaves are very dark green and willowy. At the tips of new growth continuous red and purple flowers appear. The tube and sepals appear shiny on this Fuchsia and the flowers are tipped outward, beckoning hummingbirds. To 7’ tall in a year and spreading to 5’ wide. May be cut to the ground to regrow/refresh in early spring. Tolerates many situations from part shade to full sun. Rich soil and regular water is important. Excellent garden plant.
Fuchsia ‘Insulinde’ Zn8b (15º to 20ºF) Onagraceae
A variety very much like Gartenmeister but a big improvement. Purple/ burgundy leaves on a tall growing plant to 30". Profuse, intense, coral tubular flowers from each branch tip throughout the season. Good branching w/ out pinching. Excellent container Fuchsia. Part shade in rich soil with regular water and fertilizer. Overwinter slightly dry in a garage, repot and fertilize in April or plant deeply in the ground and mulch.

Among the top hardiest garden Fuchsias with aubergine- red sepals and a corolla of rich, deep purple on a vigorous growing plant to 3' tall and as wide. Attractive wine red stems and deep green leaves. Part shade and rich soil, with regular water and fertilizer. Mulch in the fall. Good in containers. Plant deep. Hardy. Fuchsia ‘Lady Boothby’ Zn7b (5º to 10ºF) Onagraceae
A cold hardy Fuchsia that is excellent in the ground in part shade, rich soil with regular water. To 3' tall and wide, resprouts from the base vigorously if frozen. Dark red sepals with a corolla of deep purple black. Exceptionally nice foliage that is velvety to the touch and tinted red. Upright habit. Good in containers, much hardier in the ground. Plant with the crown slightly below ground level for added vigor, winter protection.
Fuchsia ‘Logan Garden’ Zn7a (0º to 5ºF) Onagraceae
A rare but spectacular hardy Fuchsia selected in Scotland that grows very quickly to at least 4' each season. Profuse small flowers (the size of regular hardy Fuchsias) with sepals that are white in warm weather and tinged with pink when its cooler. The corolla is dark purple/blue.Yes, its as cool as it sounds. Full sun (but not reflected heat) to part shade with regular water in rich soil. Blooms June until frost. Cold hardy.
Fuchsia magellanica ‘Hawkshead’ Zn7a (0º to 5ºF) Onagraceae
One of the most regal forms of hardy Fuchsia, 'Hawkshead' forms a large shrub
to 4' tall and as wide- larger for well grown plants. From early June until frost white flowers with sepals delicately tipped in green. Rich soil and regular water to establish a large root system. Part shade to sun. Excellent as an informal hedge with light pink Fuchsia 'Whiteknight's Pearl'. Prune dead wood out in spring AFTER new growth has begun.
Fuchsia magellanica ‘Versicolor’ Zn7a (0º to 5ºF) Onagraceae
A beautiful and tough form of the “Hardy Fuchsia”. Leaves of light gray edged in white provide contrast with delicate red stems. In late summer curtains of think red and purple flowers give this upright growing plant added grace. Top is hardy to about 24ºF. Expect it to freeze to the ground and resprout from the base. Established plants rise to 30” tall and as wide. Must have rich soil and regular uninterrupeted growth through the season. Plant deeply.
Fuchsia ‘Orange Drops’ Zn8b (15º to 20ºF) Onagraceae
We don’t normally grow many tender Fuchsias but this very lax (almost trailing) variety has some of the very best TRUE orange flowers of any hybrid. To 1’ tall and spreading to nearly 3’ wide it makes a VERY impressive container plant. ‘Orange Drops’ works especially well with the very hot colors of Coleus and other vivid tropical annuals. Very profuse bloomer lining the stems with flowers continually form Mother’s Day until a hard freeze. Sepals are true orange with a corolla of true dark orange. Part shade, moist, rich soil. Avoid exposure to strong drying winds...Fuchsias HATE that.

Fuchsia ‘Preston Guild’ Zn7b (5º to 10ºF) Onagraceae
'Preston Guild' is an ultra cold hardy and floriferous Fuchsia with a tidy upright growing habit. To 2' tall it produces single flowers with white sepals which reflex heavily after opening (reminiscent of Oragami) and a corolla of violet blue that fades to lavender. Morning sun or part shade with rich soil and regular water. As all do, freezes to the ground at 24∞F, returns in late spring. Mulch in fall.

Fuchsia procumbens ‘Mary Miller’ Zn7b (5º to 10ºF) Onagraceae
A charming hardy fuchsia is native to sand dunes in New Zealand. The variegated form makes a striking groundcover and is a nice backdrop to the small upward facing flowers that glow golden yellow with purple sepals and anthers with blue pollen. Relatively large berries follow. Full sun to light shade, regular water. Deciduous. 3" tall by 2' wide. Same plant as 'variegata'- this is the correct name.
Fuchsia ‘Ravenslaw’ Zn7b (5º to 10ºF) Onagraceae
Very pretty cold hardy Fuchsia that has large flowers that are selfed carmine red on red. Matching sepals and corolla. Fuchsia regia ssp. Serrae Zn8a (10º to 15ºF) Onagraceae
A very unusual shrubby Fuchsia with incredible pewter/gray leaves that contrast well with red stems and petioles. Best in part shade in rich moist soil. Somewhat spreading, layered habit. Resprouts quickly if frozen to the ground. In late summer cute 1” thin flowers appear with pink sepals and a light blue corolla. Very pretty and natural looking Fuchsia for a woodland garden. Plant deeply and then mulch the first few season.
Fuchsia ‘Speciosa’ Zn8a (10º to 15ºF) Onagraceae
'Speciosa' is one of the hardiest orange flowering Fuchsias. To 3' tall and at least as wide it produces bright vermillion orange flowers with sepals tipped with green from early summer until frost. The leaves are large and heart shaped and covered with fur that gives the plant an overall feeling of softness. Part shade to shade with rich soil and regular water. Freezes to the ground in winter, MULCH in fall. GREAT garden plant.

An extremely unusual hardy Fuchsia that is upright but compact to only 20" tall and as wide. Sepals begin green and change through pink to terra cotta orange and the corolla is a shiny violet. Full sun with regular water and protection from reflected heat to light shade. Very reliable plant. Mulch for the first winter. Prune away dead wood in spring AFTER growth has started.

An extremely cold hardy Fuchsia that is also tolerant of full sun. To 3' tall and as wide, aubergine/red sepals open to reveal a deep purple center, then fade to a single color. One of the darkest flower colors of any cold hardy Fuchsia. The pollen on mature plants is blue! Full sun regular water. Freezes back at about 24∞, resprouts from the base in spring. Cut back to live growth after it leafs out in spring. Performs best in the ground.

An extremely vigorous and easy to grow hardy Fuchsia. To 4' tall and as wide it produces abundant pink and very light lavender curtains of flowers. Flowers are larger than F. m. 'molinae'. From a distance it looks like a chandelier. Part shade and regular water in rich soil. This Fuchsia LOVES moist soil. Prune in spring when new growth begins. Deciduous. Perfectly hardy- makes a nice informal hedge with F. 'Hawkshead'.
