Greg’s Xera Garden

One of the best fine textured Yucca species that easily thrives in our climate. Yucca linearifolia. A spectacular garden plant year round.

We LOVE this shrub- its our selection of  The Mountain Bottlebrush(Callistemon viridiflorus) and we’ve named it ‘Xera Compact’. Exceptionally heavy flowering and cold hardy to 5ºF. Regular summer water.

Penstemon pinifolius ‘Melon’ with Sedum spathulifolium in the foreground. Yucca nana (herrmaniae)is nestled in with the Sedum.

Pretty Sedum rupestre ‘Spanish Selection’ consorts with  furry Cotula hispida, and in the background  blooming Festuca punctoria.

Two stellar west coast natives dominate this planting. The crimson orange flowers of ‘Select Mattole’ Zauschneria (Epilobium) septentrionalis, and the vastly underused Willamette Valley native grass, Festuca californica which ranges south into California.

This is a grouping of Xera classic shrubs. The mound in the foreground covered in silky yellow flowers is the fantastic Halimium ocymoides ‘Susan’ which is being hugged by ‘John Dourley’ Manzanita, new growth tinted orange. The brushy vivid green shrubs are the perfectly cold hardy Hebe ‘Karo Golden Esk’. In the distance is Alpine Bottlebrush swarming with small light yellow flowers. Behind John D. is Euphorbia rigida- an imperative plant for early spring. ‘Red Select’ Geranium peeks in from the right side.

So striking when this Artemesia decides to bloom, it reaches for the sky. Other perennials and shrubs in the background mimic the wispy habit. (Artemesia canescens)

Xera Plants Introduction

This stunning rockery is home to the cold hardy, non-spiny, easy to grow Agave bracteosa. Cactus (Opuntia sp.) make a snug home absorbing the radiated heat of the basalt boulders. In the back the grass Schizachyrium scopulorum ‘The Blues’ mimics the upswept theme before it turns to crimson and pink in fall. This landscape is a no water landscape which means that after the first year its left to fend for moisture on its own. A great western look that is repeated throughout the garden.

Climate adapted plants for gardeners in the PNW.
