Red Elderberry is a widespread adaptable large shrub for sun to quite a bit of shade. It can be found in riparian zones around the whole state, more common in Western Oregon it occurs in just about every biome in the state. It will tolerate upland conditions too. Frothy white flowers in early spring morph into clusters of vibrant red berries that are only edible for humans if cooked. Birds distribute this shrub and it can even be found thriving in dry shade under conifers. To 16′ tall in 6 years- very fast growing deciduous shrub with handsome pinnate foliage. Fall color is yellow and brief. The showy berries disappear quickly. Rich to poor soils, give it more irrigation in rough conditions and less when its fat and happy.
