This is the European subspecies selection of the very widespread Birch leaf Spiraea. This is a pan-global species at higher latitudes and it is represented in our local form (Spiraea betuifolia var. lucida) Varnished leaf birch leaf Spiraea. This is an immensely tidy and tough little deciduous shrub. It shows great drought adaptation, not needing supplemental irrigation after the first year. In summer clusters of white flowers with promenent petals as opposed to our form which lacks these. Also the stamens are much more restrained in this cultivar as opposed to our native variety. This makes the two easy to distinguish in bloom the native has furry white flowers and ‘Tor’ produces white petals. The clusters of flowers appear from wood of the previous season and completely obscures the foliage. Blooms for 4 -6 weeks May to early July. VERY compact to 2 ‘ x 2.5’ in 10 years. And it has very reliable and spectacular fall color with flaming red and orange leaves that persist well into late fall- this seldom occurs with our native subspecies. Very easy to grow in full sun, to light shade. Accepts regular water in summer but is consistently drought tolerant. ‘Tor’ is Gaelic for tight mound or hump. Excellent tough, elegant shrub. Mass for a tall ground cover. Plant with Sidalceas, Erygium, and verbena rigida.
